When you have 6 kids there are birthdays all over the calendar year and really hard to keep track of all of them. Heck I even forget my own birthday because we are so busy and who really knows what day it is anyway. Plus sometimes a kid is not with us on their birthday or don’t answer the phone when we call blah blah blah. So a couple of years ago we decided to solve this “problem” and try to avoid any hurt feelings if we forgot (*bite knuckle) a birthday or whatever the case maybe. Our solution was to celebrate EVERYONE’S birthday once a year in the summer when we have all the kids together. It is now famously known as the “Summer Birthday Bash!” and the kids look forward to it all year. They must really love it because they still talk about the previous years birthday bashes.
One of the years we did a treasure map on our property and sent them on a hunt that they retrieved the map from “Captain Brown Eye”. It was a silly lookin pirate pinata. They then went on this massive treasure hunt to find goody bags along the way and of course X marks the spot where they dug up a bag full of stuff to make smores. Followed by a pirate attack and sword fight.
The next year since that was such a big hit we did a “Party on the Docks” with a bunch of friends. It was fun day full of water balloon fights and launching kids off the docks.
Well this year we decided to step it up a notch. While we were in Oregon we decided to do the birthday bash on the Sprague River. There is this awesome spot that is quiet, remote, and a great swimming area for the kids. The theme this year was the “Sprague River Duck”. Which happened to be the most ridiculous pinata I could find. I made up this story about how the sprague river ducks are very rare and almost extinct so we must protect them. It is always great when a child swears they saw one Haha!
So we went on this hunt to find the duck. The kids had a blast beating the crap out of the funny lookin pinata. We then read them a riddle and they had to go find the treasure that was buried in the river. The boys ended up being the ones to find it! Out smarted their older sisters. Daddy had went out and hid 6 cans of soda for the kids and 2 cans of beers for us in the river. Naturally the first one Darius finds is a beer and shouts, “I found a beer in the river! Ice cold beer!” LOL.
They had a blast with the face paint. What a good sport Daddy was for letting them paint him. There were tons of sword fights the foam noodles Grandpa and Grandma Liz brought. Plus games and water pistols for a fun filled week at the river.
In truth we had come up with a Zombie theme and started dropping hints a few days before we got to the river. We told them about an outbreak we saw on the news. And we bought make up (Annika was in on it) and slowly started increasing the make up on Annika and Daddy to make them look sick. Of course Annabelle our 6 year old logical one wasn’t buying it and told all the kids she was sure we were using make up. Our plan was to wait till dusk then put on this huge amped up charade. Well the boys kept falling a sleep early and maybe 5 is a little young for what we had planned. But there is always next year…
Now that we have set the stakes so high can’t wait for next year!
